Roland sat first surprised and then completely captured by the two women's song. It was true as Orin had implied— Celeste's voice was lovely. Yet as he studied her, took in the unequaled beauty of her, he realized that her voice, like her physical form, was lacking something for all its perfection. There was no passion in it, no life in that distant unattainable beauty.

As he listened it was Meredyth's voice that truly stirred him, her small heart-shaped face that drew his gaze as her lids lowered and she lost herself in her playing and singing. Her voice was low and slightly husky and as full of earthy sensuality as the woman herself.

Roland looked back at Celeste and saw how her haunted gaze went to the knight, Giles. He was neither blind nor a fool, and he began to have a very strong suspicion as to why Meredyth had presented herself to be married to him in her sister's stead.

Although Roland felt her action misguided, there was a place in him that also knew a sense of grudging understanding. He too had loved his brother thus, would have done anything for him, even something as ridiculous as trading places with him had he asked.

Not that Geoffrey ever would have asked such a thing. He had been made of more honorable substance than this Celeste Chalmers. Roland feared Meredyth's loyalty to her sister was completely unnecessary, even while it was commendable. It was quite clear that Celeste, especially being the elder, should have had more strength of character than to expect such a thing of Meredyth.

Surprisingly, Roland found himself wondering if fate had stepped in to bestow upon him another unexpected favor.

This thought, for reasons he was not sure of, was oddly unsettling. He looked again to his wife, his gaze drawn to the delicate sweetness of her profile as she sang, her eyes closed. Roland felt yet another rippling stir of emotion as her voice seemed to flow into him, the sensuous sound creeping through his blood, marrow and bones until it seemed a part of him.

Abruptly the music ended and he found himself unexpectedly bereft as the others made incomprehensible noises of appreciation.

It was at that moment that Meredyth looked up and met his eyes, her own expression surprisingly yearning, and for a long moment it was as if they two, Roland and Meredyth, were alone in all the world. Roland felt his chest tighten with an almost painful warmth as his breath quickened. It was as if something, some indefinable bond, had bridged over the space between them.

As if they were joined in some immutable way and always had been.Roland did not realize for a moment that he was being spoken to.

Feeling somewhat disoriented, he looked up and into the speculative gaze of Sir Giles. "What say you, Lord Kirkland...?"

Roland closed his eyes, swallowing hard. He did not know what had just happened, only it had changed him. It was as if some long-buried place inside had just had the first whisper of light it had known in a very long time.
